about
That Guitar is one of the hardest songs I have written so far.
If you weren't aware, we lost my Dad in September 2018. He had a form of Alzheimer's and many other health issues.
My Dad gave me music.
From my first memories, there was music surrounding us.
The song is about the guitar that I remember so dearly from my early childhood, as he worked to provide for his family. Along with being the Plant Manager at Rich Products of Canada, he was a really well known country musician both here in southern Ontario and back at his home area in Avoca / Calumet Quebec. He spent many nights out at bars, legions and dance halls doing what he loved. Our house was always alive with music.
My Mom Charlotte also sang in the church choir and played piano as well.
For several years I had the privilege of being on stage with him as the drummer in his country band 21 Plus (I was 21 and he was the Plus!)
The song really came to life in the Producer's hands (Jason Barry | Barrytone Studios) with the help of the session players and I'm really looking forward to sharing it later in July.
Thank you for your support, I really appreciate knowing that my music means something!
lyrics
‘That Guitar’
A tattered case, a broken handle
In his dusty cellar there it laid
With Dad’s mind slowly fading
Many years since they saw the light of stage
Opened the case then it all hit me
Like a doorway back in time
It’s one day I won’t soon forget
Still smell the bars and the cigarettes
I miss the sounds of those yesterdays
Still hear his voice with that guitar
Can’t turn back time that’s just the way it is
Sometimes changes are so hard,
Sometimes changes are so hard
Lathered face, razor in his hand
Hee Haw on the set before he’d go
Sang country music some nights till dawn
That guitar’s seen so many shows
Now he’s gone I’ll always miss him
Stories of the bars and old dance halls
So many songs, so many miles
Can almost hear his voice with that Gibson on my wall
I miss the sounds of those yesterdays
Still hear his voice with that guitar
Can’t turn back time that’s just the way it is
Sometimes changes are so hard,
Sometimes changes are so hard
If that guitar could only talk
Heartache and heartbreak that it saw
Laughter, love and tears
Wish it could tell me more about those years
I miss the sounds of those yesterdays
Still hear his voice with that guitar
Can’t turn back time that’s just the way it is
Sometimes changes are so hard,
Sometimes changes are so hard
A tattered case, a broken handle
